Christmas Glass Etching ~ Week 2 Link Up

The kids recently had the opportunity to try their hand at glass etching during one of our local hardware store workshops.

I was pretty excited when we were told they were going to pull out the tools to give the kids a go at this. But I was also a little apprehensive about it all.

I've never used a tool like this and have never attempted to etch onto glass so I wasn't overly sure how successful this would be. I had visions of broken glasses everywhere!

Boy was I wrong! This is so much easier than I could have ever imagined and the kids had an absolute blast.

They were glued to that table the entire workshop. The most important skill needed here is a steady hand but I can see that the more you used the tools the better that would become.

The other great thing is that the tools themselves are not overly expensive and if you choose appropriately they will etch onto not only glass but also timber, metal and ceramic.

Christmas Gift idea here I come!!

The finished glasses were tricky to photograph and this was made even more difficult by the fact that all edges of the glass have been etched so the images blend in with each other, but they look rather cool and turned out very well indeed.

Christmas In A Box ~ Week 1 Link Up

Here we are at our first installment for the Christmas Fun link up!

Did you read the introductory post? Have you grabbed the button to share?

Please quickly jump over there now so you are in the know of our plans for Christmas Fun!

Then come back so I can show you the cool Christmas crafts my kids have been creating this week, thanks to Clever diy.

clever diy craft boxes

I've considered purchasing something from Clever DIY since Clever Patch released these all in one crafty boxes.

My kids are all into art and craft, they love everything about the mess, the creating, the doing and the end results. I had kind of figured that they would enjoy something like this.

So I was over the moon when they agreed to send us a box to try.

clever diy craft kits

Well, they loved it! They absolutely loved it! And honestly who wouldn't it. I loved it too.

I've been very lucky over the years to review some great products and this particular one has got to be right up on my list of all time fabulous products.

clever diy craft kits

The kits are so well put together, no trashy bits and bobs in here. Every single thing needed to complete the crafts is found inside the box.

The first thing that came to mind for me was that these would be fabulous to take on holidays. All I need is the compact box with everything thoughtfully housed inside.

We often enjoy undertaking some type of art/craft activity whilst away on holidays and this would make that so much easier to do.

christmas crafts for kids

As you know I have three children and we had one box, but thankfully there are a few different craft items in there to complete. They quickly chose something each and were underway. All I did was fill a bowl with some water.

My daughter fell in love with this item as soon as she saw it. The kit comes with a full colour brochure showing ideas for completed pieces if the child would like that. I simply left it on the table with everything else, so it was totally up to them how they went about it.

christmas crafts for kids

We still have a couple of not quite finished Christmas crafts but I wanted to get this post up for you all ASAP. That way you have plenty of time for your own box of Christmas Craft goodies to arrive on your doorstep.

So if I had to choose some kind of constructive criticism the only thing I can come up with is, I would love an extra paint brush and messy mat so that more than one child can create at the same time.

Oh and when is my next box arriving?!!!!!!

Thank you Clever DIY this is a fabulous idea and so well delivered. I am very impressed.

Disclaimer: Our family was given one Christmas Craft box in order to write this review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Monthly Memories February 2012

A Monthly Reflection style post is something that I have been thinking about for awhile now. I did this for a little bit a year or so ago. With 3 kids I think I made it harder than it needs to be.

When I saw Gabby's Looking Back posts I was again inspired. I love how she breaks down her categories, makes thinking about the month past so easy.

However I didn't move on the idea, until I got a little nudge. Whilst the NBTS hop was happening I had a suggestion for a wrap up style post meme. I knew I could never commit to a weekly meme, but monthly, I could try for.

So without further ado here is our first installment of Monthly Memories.

Considering how busy we've been this month I'm pretty happy with the amount of intentional learning that took place. Both kids are motoring through their maths and language arts.

Fairy Princess had fun measuring the house and her little brother with her cat measuring tool.

We've been rowing an Australian book and have spent quite a bit of time learning from that, spelling, vocab, list making, geography and art.

There is always an abundance of play. The nanoblocks were a definite hit this month.

The boys spent a considerable amount of time creating 'Australia Zoos'. Love seeing my big boy and little boy playing together.

This month we began our co-op style classes with our homeschool network. The children are participating in Art classes, Science classes and Little Surfer Dude has begun his first intro into structured activities, with Junior Soccer and a Junior Physi kids program.

We've been enjoying art classes with the same teacher for over two years now, both of the children are gaining so much from these. Fairy Princess has an animal focus this term, cats, owls, giraffe's and mixed up creatures.
Lego Lover's age group is looking at Artist's from around the world, Picasso, Rizzi, Dali.

In science they have been covering topics such as sound, water pressure, friction and completing simple experiments each week.

Little Surfer Dude loves his soccer classes, they are all so cute running around after their balls.

Lego Lover has instigated several learning opportunities for Little Surfer Dude of late. This particular morning they were working in a small counting book.

Yay, I actually have a pile of books to share that Lego Lover has read, in fact I am pretty sure there were more, but these I'm certain of. Gone are the days of worrying about reading!

Fairy Princess is working her way through a stack of early readers also. We have a ways to go, but these monthly posts will be a great opportunity to watch her growth in this area.

Without a doubt this month's greatest achievement has been for Lego Lover. He is writing phobic! This year we have talked a lot about how important it is be able to write and write well.

Earlier this month I suggested he start with a Journal. He has written daily at least 4 times a week every week this month. This simple exercise is helping him in so many ways, he is achieving so much........we are on the writing road!!!!

This month we started back with our Extra Curricular activity days, which are organised by our Distance Ed School. These are a much anticipated part of our week. Little Surfer Dude gets to spend the day playing on the playground with a myriad of other 2,3 & 4 year olds, plus we have a small area of activities set up for them.

The bigger two are off enjoying classes of all sorts, dance, drama, music, ukelele, sports, AUSLAN, science, public speaking, art, technology and we are about to trial in the new Show Choir, just to name a few.

We are so blessed to have this opportunity. We really have the best of both worlds - school, without school and for our family, it works.

We took a visit to the Art Gallery this month to see the fabulous installation - We Miss You Magic Land. This was an amazing piece of art (several pieces actually) constructed using coloured sugar and other bits and pieces. Very inspiring.

Whilst we've experienced the 'dot room' concept before it is still so much fun. The room started out completely white. The children were given coloured dots to stick anywhere in the room they wanted.

Of course there's no visit to the art gallery without heading over to the museum as well.

Our first excursion with our school this year was to White Water World, loads of water slide fun!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to thank Gabby for the inspiration to break the post into categories. I borrowed a few of hers and also to Ingi for adding in a couple more ideas for category topics and Kendra for the nudge in getting me to move forward on this.

Whilst this meme has been designed for Australian Home School Bloggers it is open to any home schooling family wishing to participate.

Please feel free to use the category headers in your own posts if you wish. (just right click and save as) Have ideas for other categories? Let me know and I can make up some matching images for them.

The aim is that my post will be up on either the last day of the month or very early in the month following, depending on when the month end falls and how organised or disorganised I am.

Please spread the word about this meme, let's encourage as many as possible to start reflecting and recording the memories.

Now it's time for you to add your Monthly Memories post below.

A Baby Chino Moment To Remember

Did you notice that Jolanthe and Carissa have started a new linky?

Moments To Remember

~ Little Surfer Dude is 3.4 years ~
~Week Ending November 25th ~

From Jolanthe:

Moments to Remember was developed as a simple way to look back on our week as homeschoolers and find photos that encompass the memories we want to remember.
The week may have been tough, there may have been more bumps than smiles, but in the end these are the moments that keep us going, the ones we need to remember.

This week, the older two had birthday parties and play dates arranged, so Little Surfer Dude and I got to spend a few rare hours on our own.

We both love and cherish these times. It's so hard to get some special time with each of your kiddo's on their own. You really do need to make the effort with this.

Cultivating those special bonds, that can really only truly grow from, special one on one time, is something that I have been working on with each of the children.

Generally it is because we have something practical to achieve, a haircut, new shoes or clothes.  But I choose to use that time to also spend 'alone time' with that particular child. We go out, get done what we need to get done and then generally have some yummy lunch (kids choice) and if time permits do something else together.

These, "Kid Dates" have been invaluable to me and my children.

Little Surfer Dude is in the 'loving baby chino's' stage, so after spending some time at home cuddling, reading and playing, we met my mum for morning tea and a baby chino....a giant one at that, gee they have grown!!

He is so delightfully gorgeous, I just wish I could bundle him up and keep at this stage of his life forever!

Thanks for starting this linky Jolanthe and Carissa. Please visit Moments To Remember, for more special moments.

The King With Horse's Ears

The King With Horse's Ears is a folk tale that is believed to have been linked to the Ancient Greek legend of King Midas.

A slightly longer read when it comes to picture books, the story of King Mark is one to be heard by all!

King Mark keeps a secret, a secret about himself that he is utterly ashamed of. He fears the thoughts of others, if his secret is revealed.

Don't we all have a secret about ourselves that we keep hidden, far within, untouchable by no one, simply because of our fear of what others may think of us?

There is one person, however that knows of King Mark's secret and he too is trapped by it. This secret causes him ill health, as I am sure many a secret has done to others over the course of time.

Eventually the secret is revealed and as generally occurs in real life, the beholder of the secret experiences the lifting of a burden. A burden they have often carried with them for years. He realises that he had nothing to be ashamed of after all.

If only we could guide our children to believe in themselves no matter how 'different' they may appear to be. I know this is something that I strive for with my children, especially after realising later in life (ok I'm not that old, but....) how your opinions of yourself really do shape and mould who you become as an adult.

Breaking free of negative thoughts  that we have carried with us throughout our lives is truly freeing. But what if we didn't have those negative thoughts to begin with? Do you think that is even possible?

I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book is written and illustrated by Australians, although they are both living overseas. The illustrations are intriguing and the story even more so.

I think this is one that will be kept in the, 'too read regularly pile.'

I am linking this to What My Child Is Reading.

An Arty Crafty Party

Lately I have found myself spending a great deal of time searching through various linky lists looking for specific hands on and art and craft activites related to our themes.

There are some wonderful link lists out there, with a myriad of ideas. For someone with very little time the sharing that takes place in the online homeschool community is nothing short of amazing.

However I want all of the ideas on one topic/theme all together in one easy to find place. You do too right? I mean I'm not asking too much, am I? That way there would be no need for me to spend a couple of hours look backing through the archives of the various linky's/meme's that I frequent.

I could just add everything over to my tagfoot page, but you know that takes time, quite a bit of time, and whilst I use it alot and really like my tagfoot page with its' easy to find categories, I love the thumbnail images that a linky list provides, all conveniently together.

So An Arty Crafty Party is born!

These will be weekly link ups on a chosen theme/topic, although I will probably leave the link list open so you can come back and add to that particular theme at anytime in the future. Old  and new links alike are all welcome. Links for the younger ages right through to us mature folk are encouraged too.

Art and Craft is a very open ended topic, any links that are hands on and creative in some way and that relate to the theme are welcome.

To join in the fun you simply need to place our button somewhere on your blog or in the blog post you are adding to the link list and then go ahead and add your links.

Grab the code below to add to your blog for the Arty Crafty Party link up.

Our Worldwide Classroom

Following are some of the upcoming themes.Links have been added to existing themes.

St Patricks Day
Weather
Picasso
Spring
Easter
Space

When adding your link be sure to include appropriate details in your link description. For example, you've created Paddy's Day Rainbows with your toddler and tissue paper. The link description could read - "Toddler Tissue Paper Rainbows"  detailed descriptions along with a thumbnail image make it super easy for visitors to find exactly what it is they are looking for and in turn your blog.

I sure hope you'll join in the fun.
