Christmas Glass Etching ~ Week 2 Link Up

The kids recently had the opportunity to try their hand at glass etching during one of our local hardware store workshops.

I was pretty excited when we were told they were going to pull out the tools to give the kids a go at this. But I was also a little apprehensive about it all.

I've never used a tool like this and have never attempted to etch onto glass so I wasn't overly sure how successful this would be. I had visions of broken glasses everywhere!

Boy was I wrong! This is so much easier than I could have ever imagined and the kids had an absolute blast.

They were glued to that table the entire workshop. The most important skill needed here is a steady hand but I can see that the more you used the tools the better that would become.

The other great thing is that the tools themselves are not overly expensive and if you choose appropriately they will etch onto not only glass but also timber, metal and ceramic.

Christmas Gift idea here I come!!

The finished glasses were tricky to photograph and this was made even more difficult by the fact that all edges of the glass have been etched so the images blend in with each other, but they look rather cool and turned out very well indeed.

Backyard Fun: Constructing a Cubby/Lean Too From Off Cuts

We recently had a very large dead tree cut down in our backyard. The majority of the timber is now at my parents home waiting for winter. I have a feeling they will not be in need of timber for their fireplace for quite a long while.

There was a substantial amount of bark and smaller branches left over, perfect for our own little bonfire, which I expect at some stage we will have. Probably once we hit Autumn again and the weather begins to cool down. (which is a fair while off)

In the meantime however the kids and their dad built this little masterpiece.

I really have no idea who came up with the idea and in fact I didn't even know it was happening until it was all finished. They were all happily in the backyard doing their thing, as they very often do on a Saturday afternoon (thoughtfully giving this mummy a few hours break ~ Thank You) and this is the end result of their time together.

DH made up a little frame and found something in the shed suitable for a door, he attached the frame to the shed wall and as you can see they have built a significant structure from what was laying around.

Whilst it isn't overly roomy inside they love it and will quite often retreat up there, take a blanket and some food and just hang out.

Getting in and out isn't the simplest of activities for the larger member of the crew but none of them are bothered by that at all.

The kids learnt a great deal about construction and design without even knowing it on this little project and considering that I personally have seen people living in less than this it has made them think about how blessed they really are to have a large beautiful home and sprawling backyard.

Easy Peasy Alphabet Work

This has to be probably the easiest thing I have put together yet and all because I cheated! Well you know, I didn't spend hours searching for clip art and creating all of the little images and then all of the printing, cutting and laminating (oh I still had to do a bit of that).

I actually purchased a couple of very reasonably priced posters recently from Aldi, just another one of their super specials that they get in from time to time.

I'm not a big fan of posters, they take up alot of room and get used very little, well at these sorts of ones do anyway. But I decided that I could cut them all up and we could play games with them.

I did up a quick control chart so that they can alphabetized independently. They can also be used for object/phonics work, we can play snap, memory and the list goes on.

So for roughly half an hours work I am pretty happy with the results. It now has a place on our language shelves, lets see if anyone likes it.

Preschool Activity Bags

Preschool Activities in a Bag has been on my must purchase list for some time now. My only problem is finding the time to create all of the activities, which is why I haven't as yet purchased one of the e-books. (yeah slack I know)

However, Teaching My Little Bookworm is giving away one of each of the EBooks. I guess if I won one, which would be fabulous, I'd have to get off my b%$ and put together the activities. hehehe

These would be great to do as a group swap, as they suggest on their website. Must make a note to talk to the girls in our homeschool group to see if there is any interest in doing a swap like this. If any of you are reading this let me know what you think.

Anyway, if you would like a chance to win a copy of one of these, jump on over to Teaching My Little Bookworm.
