Christmas Fun - Honeycomb Christmas Tress

Every year we organise some kind of Christmas Craft Fun for the kids as a wind up to their year and to begin their Christmas Countdown celebrations.

This year we decided that it simply wouldn't cut it for the kids to have all of the fun.

It was time us mummies got to join in on a bit of the Christmas build up that the kids get to experience and enjoy every year.

So we booked our very lovely, resident cake decorator to come and run a fun workshop with us.

Honeycomb Christmas Trees

Yum, yum, yum, yum......honeycomb is one of my all time favourite sweets. It's one of those things i can't stop eating until my tounge starts going all funny. Know the feeling??

Anyway, you kinda have to look closely to see that it resembles a tree, well some were assembled better than others.

But these were fun, simple and would make lovely edible gifts if you have a few hours spare on Christmas Eve. They really need to be made as late as possible. As soon as air gets onto the honeycomb they start getting sticky.

When choosing your honeycomb you need pieces that have flat sides, well as flat as you can get. We used pieces cut into rough rectangle shapes.

You'll also need melted chocolate and lollies to decorate your tree. Coconut snow is optional.

A small plate or piece of card to build the tree on so it is easily moved will definitely help.

Start by finding several nicely shaped pieces of honeycomb and arrange them in a small circle on the card, 5 - 7 pieces is a good start to the base. Once you are happy with your base level you can 'glue' them down with the melted chocolate.

Then simply continue building the layers of the tree. Each layer needs to move inwards slightly and ensure that the honeycomb pieces cross over the joins below, just like a brick wall. Don't forget to glue with chocolate as you go.

Continue on until you reach the top, you will need to start finding smaller pieces or to break up some of your honeycomb for the top area of the tree.

Then drizzle the entire tree with chocolate and decorate in any fashion you wish. They really are very simple to put together and don't take that long at all.

Wow Kylie, those are amazing! And really, I don't think you'd have to remind me to "glue with chocolate" - that sounds just lovely to me, definitely not a step I'd forget, hee hee. :) What a lot of fun you all must have had together - it's a wonderful idea!
