My Online Time

Like most of the other blog hoppers I too probably spend way too much time online!

I do however enjoy blogging and at the moment it is really my only 'hobby' if you can call it that. And at the end of the day I justify my blogging time because I blog about the kids and their journey and through my blogging I have found so many wonderful things to do with the kids that I don't think I would have found otherwise.

The internet is my library and that is exactly how I use it. At times I just want to wander around browse at the information available. Some of it I learn from, some of it I find intriguing and some of it is just for fun.

Other times I have a plan, something in particular I am looking for and I just need to make sure I search through the correct 'shelves' in the library. At times this searching is tedious and long winded and sometimes it is as simple as a click of a button and I have found what I was after.

I'm not sure where how home school would be without the internet.

In terms of my blogging I always used to be a sporadoic blogger, at times posting daily and even twice daily and then breaking for weeks. Lately I have been trying to even my blogging time out somewhat. I now endeavour to schedule 3 posts per week 2 - 3 weeks in advance (well that's the plan anyway ;-) ).

I've always got scrap bits of paper lying around with post ideas scribbled down and many of them are in my head, whilst others stem from browsing my recent photographs. Very disorganised to say the least.

As recently as the past few weeks I had been keeping lists and thoughts for the blog jotted down all together in one little notebook, which is certainly a far cry from the scrap bits of paper all over the desk, but still the system I needed had eluded me. Considering that I have more than one blog, plus my other online presences, one little notebook just wasn't cutting it.

So I decided to put together a very simple printable planning and scheduling page for my blog/s. I include the Post Title (or if that is unknown just an idea) whether the post is in draft form or if it has been scheduled. You do all know about scheduling your posts don't you?  Ok I'll come back to that in a tick. Once the post has been schedule I add in the Scheduled Date to that column  and right at the end is a column for anything that I may still need for the post. Once the post is showing up and is done and dusted I simply draw a line through it.

Sometimes I upload lots of pics for various posts at once and need to come back and add in the copy so normally that last column will simply be a note to remind myself that I need to actually write the post.

 Please ignore my scribble

Whilst this would be so simple to put together yourself, I have uploaded a copy to my Scribd Documents, which you can download here if you wish.

Now, back to scheduling. Just in case there is someone out there that doesn't know about scheduling, this is a real life saver. It means that you can sit down and write posts whenever you feel like it and have them post (show up) on your blog at the time and date that you choose.

How To Schedule A Post? Write your post, add your labels etc, on the left hand side at the bottom of your post (this is for blogger users by the way) which is the other side of where you enter your posts labels, you will see Post Options, click it.  Here you can choose how your comments will appear and choose a date to schedule your posts. Simple!

Now let's get back to the topic at hand. I have explained how I handle my own blog. Or how at least I am trying to handle it. When it comes to reading other blogs that is an entirely different story.  I am terrible at following blogs, as in I follow way too many blogs, but seriously there are so many great ideas out there how can I not follow along.

I know that 'external readers' seem to be the big thing at the moment but I personally prefer to use my Reading List on my blogger dashboard. I simply scroll through and select the blogs to visit. For me it is as much about the experience of visiting the blog as it is to read the post.

Kind of like comparing going to a friends house for a cuppa and a chat or making a coffee and phoning them. The visiting part is always much more enjoyable!

Since my 'following' list is always growing I have become very selective in regards to the posts that I choose to read and even more so when it comes to commenting. I just simply don't have the time. I also find that for me it is easier to take 5 or 10 minutes where I can to check my Reading List for new posts and if something interests me I can quickly jump over and read it. When I leave my reading to do in one big chunk of time it takes way too long and those are the times I comment even less.

I always endeavour to rise before the children (not always possible when you co sleep) and that is my time. I do not do any housework of any description in the wee hours of the morning, no matter how badly it might need doing. I grab a cuppa and catch up on emails, forums/yahoo groups I visit, blogs I read. If after this the children are still asleep I will move on to more research for future units and creating or downloading the necessary printable materials I may need. This is the time that the majority of my online stuff is done.

I do though take smaller breaks throughout the day to check in when I can.

What about you? How do you spend your time online? You still have time to join in the blog hop.

How Do you Spend Your Time Online

Theme: How Do You Spend Your Time Online?

Since you are participating in this blog hop you obviously blog and spend some time online reading other blogs and homeschooling/education websites. Not to mention the time that you spend on your blog, writing posts and the like.

How do you do it? How do you work in your hobby of blogging, your leisure time of reading blogs, homeschooling and everything else involved with running a household.

Are you a wing it kind of gal and just grab time whenever you can on the computer? Or do you have a plan? Do you schedule all of your posts in large chunks or blog daily? Do you visit your favourite blogs/websites whenever you get a chance or do you set aside a couple of hours on a friday night for blog reading?

Walk us through and share with us how you organise (or lack thereof) your time online, maybe we can learn a thing or two from sharing :)

Family Fun: Favourite Board Games

I had every intention of including some photo's of us actually playing our current favourite games as lately we have been playing lots, but not this past week.

Typical hey, as soon as you want something it doesn't happen!

So anyway, I'll share our current favourites. I admit we have a large amount of board games and some of them we just do not get to, but I am sure over time we will.

Playing games with an 8 year old, that can just about play any adult game, a 6 year old that still requires alot of assistance and a 2 year old that just delights in trashing the game at every opportunity, is well, let's say, challenging at best.

I have been strewing our games lately, choosing one or two out of the cupboard and leaving them out and of course they always get picked up. It is interesting to hear the comments when a freshly strewed game is opened. "Mum, I'm really not into this game!", "Mum I don't like playing this game!" etc etc and then after a few nights of play, suddenly the game is the best ever!

Blokus, is a challenging game, the first to use all of their oddly shaped pieces on the board is the winner. Players pieces must touch each other but only on the corners. Lots going on here and surprsingly our 6 year old did really very well at this game, once she got the hang of the corner touching.

I think the blokus board is great for younger ones to just sit and play with the pieces, manipulating them into the slots on the board. Each player also has loads of little pieces infront of them that can kep a toddler busy whilst you play the game, just remember to check under the table regularly for stray pieces ;-)

Sequence has been a favourite in our home since we first received it and it remains to be so today.

It is a combination of a card game and a board game in one. It is also really fun played in teams.

B first started out with this game not long before he was 7, sitting on someone's lap and watching everything that went on and slowly having a turn here and there.

He progressed to having someone play with him and it really didn't take very long at all for him to begin tackling the game on his own.

Now he is very much holding his own, this is a busy game with lots happening on the board and depending on who you play with it is also a fast paced game so you do need your wits about you.

In all honesty this is not one of my favourite games, however the kids love it!

It's loud and people are bumping you back to home all the time and it never seems to end. I think all of the reasons why I don't like the game are the exact reasons why the kids do!!

Everyone except C(2) can easily play this game, sometimes K(6) may need a little advice as to who she should bump off the board but aprt from that it is pretty easy to pick up.

The kids love it when you bump someone, they all sing in chorus (C included) 'sorry, sorry, sorry', it cause quite a raucous this game.

What are your favourite family board games? Join in with the hop and share them with us, we love finding new games. You still have plenty of time to join in.

Time For Me, Mum, Mother, Mom, My Time

I have read so many fabulous responses to this Home School Hop. I love that the participants are so varied, everyone has their own ideas and views on what is and isn't important to them.

Having not homeschooled from the beginning I did struggle somewhat with the initial settling in period and had some days where I wondered if I would ever get to be on my own again.

However I have come to value the quiet moments at home, even though the children are still here in the house.

I am a firm believer in allowing children the freedom to play without the hovering eye of a parent and my lot will often spend hours in the backyard playing all sorts of made up games. I only need to glance out of any rear window and I can either see or hear them and our backyard is fully fenced.

Drives in the car too and from activities can actually become quite the sanctuary, some nice music, children quiet in the back. It is just me and the car and the music. I think it is all about finding those times or places where you can have some solitude.

In saying that however I do need some time away from the home, which is where my fabulous (I say that alot don't I) homeschooling friends come into play. Not only have our chidlren become great friends but we as adults also have and what a blessing that is to all of our lives. We have regular (but not too often) mums lunches and a night time thing here and there.

The beauty about homeschooling is (if you don't isolate your family) that you will have a wide network of friends or accquaintances so whenver you are out attending activities or classes for the children you will always have some one that you know fairly well to chat to.

I love a good book, but with so little free time part of me feels guilty for reading just for pleasure when I have a list a mile long of parenting, homeschooling and other books that I want to read. Ridiculous I know but we all have our little idiosyncrasies don't we!

I enjoy getting lost in a good movie, no matter how trashy, as you can just let your mind go, however with a toddler in the house the opportunities for this are somewhat limited for now.

As you can tell I enjoy blogging, it gives me an outlet and also serves as a record and journal for our homeschool days. Even if I can be a sparodic blogger at times. ;-)

My early morning cuppa is definitely one thing that I savour. I try to always rise before the children to have some time to just sit, sip and ponder.

Time For Mum - Home School Sharing Blog Hop

Time For Mum

If you are a mum you are busy!

Simple.

Regardless of any other hats you may wear during the day, SAHM, Work from home, outside the work and for us as a Home Schooling Mum
means busy, busy, busy. Schooling, reading, maths, art, science experiments, driving here there and everywhere for various classes and play dates, even those of us that keep outside 'activities' to a minimum are still busy within their own homes.

How do you as a busy mum, find some time for you?

What's your sanctuary?

Your place?

Your thing?

Even when you can't leave the home behind what do you do at home with a houseful of children to find some time for you?

Time to recharge, relax, be still, calm the mind and the spirit, so you can be 'there' for your children.

Share with us.

Homeschoolers Uniting and Sharing

This is about home educators, connecting, uniting and sharing ideas together, but still keeping everything on their own blogs.

If you enjoy connecting with other home schooler's, sharing your thoughts on a particular topic, sharing resources found or made then participating in the Home School Blog Hop might just be for you.

The hop runs fortnightly so as not to overwhelm those that join in. There are so many linky's and memes to take part in it can all get a little frantic at times.

The hop covers a different topic each time around so the posts are always varied and we have loads of fabulous responses and ideas on the themes covered. It is not just about getting extra followers, it is about connecting and sharing.

Some of what we have covered so far:

Favourite Subject
A Few of my Favourite Things
State Requirements
10 Random Questions
Why Do You Home School
Introduce Your Family

So come on over and join the next Home School Blog Hop, post will be up on Monday, keep an eye out for it. A couple of upcoming themes are Family Pastimes, Time For Mum.

Click here for the Rules of Participation, unforunately I do not have the time to visit every new blog to check that they have linked correctly. Please include in your post title either the words 'Homeschool Blog Hop' or the details of the current theme and ensure that youhave included the Link Code in your post. Blogs that are not linked correctly are deleted. If you are unsure about your post and it is your first time joining in please contact me.

If you are a regular hopper, please leave a quick comment here. I am going to make a page showing all of the blog hoppers buttons (so you will need to have one on your blog).

Homeschool Sharing Blog Hop - My Favourite Subject

Ok finally getting around to the hop!

Where have I been? I've been frightfully busy this past week or so. I organise quite a large homeschooling network and this was the week to get out our class regsitration details for next term....so it is always a bit of a full on week when I need to do that.

Art, definitely Art (and crafts of course)

Whether its toddler arty crafty activities,

Or Preschool Mixed Media Collages!

I love that you can incorporate some kind of art/craft activity into area of study, having that creative outlet really allows for solid learning to take place. Not forgetting that it is just plain down right fun, there's rarely a sour face when you pull out art and craft supplies!

I could probably share heaps more images with you but I have a toddler on my lap wanting his mummy so I won't.

I just wanted to add that I particularly love watching the artistic skills (especially drawing) of the children grow, it's an amazing transformation to witness and one I am so blessed to be able to be a part of. I am so grateful for our decision to homeschool as I truly believe that this would be one area that would be seriously lacking if we went to school, simply based on available time to spend drawing, crafting and creating. We spend alot of time on arty, crafty endeavours.

Theme: These are a few of my favourite things!

You know the song, I think we all know and love the song!

So it's your turn to share some of your favourite things. Your list may only include a few or it may be extensive, photo's would be lovely but certainly not neccessary.

What ARE your favourite things?

A Couple of Changes

Fortnightly Hopping: I have had a few suggestions to run the Blog Hop on fortnightly cycles, this was something I had considered in the beginning, so we are going to give it a try. This will allow participants plenty of time to link up their posts and to also hop on over and check out all of the great blogs that participate.

Thumbnails: I have tried the thumbnail Linky this time around. I have no idea how it works so we'll all be finding out together!

Coming Theme: Your favourite subject to teach (or learn with) your children and why? I will do my best to include the next theme so that if you wish to you can prepare for it.
